On 11/21/2008, Santa Clara County sheriff's deputies and FBI agents said Friday that they had arrested a 39-year-old Campbell man on suspicion of shining a powerful green laser at law enforcement flight crews at least 10 times over the past three years.
This man is not the first person to be arrested on charges of laser pointing. In 2005, a New Jersey man was prosecuted federally under the Patriot Act for interfering with pilots of a passenger aircraft by shining a hand-held laser into the cockpit of a plane at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey. The man pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two years probation. The federal crime carries a maximum of 20 years in prison.
Green lasers are known as being "significantly brighter (50 times)" than a red laser, and can be seen in midair dark conditions, unlike a red beam. Lasers can cause permanent eye damage, and are obviously potentially harmful to pilots. It is dangerous when we fiddle with it. Protective laser shade is recommended when direct beam viewing of Class IIIb lasers may occur. Lasers at the high power end of this class may also present a fire hazard and can lightly burn skin.
When the first time you take a laser pointer, you will be very existing and would like to make the beam achieve anywhere you can see. No mater how far and if there is some guy there. Once I have pointed the beam to a window about 300m away, the beam diameter turns into the same dimension as the window. I even do not consider if there was some kid looking out of the window, if so, it will damage his eyes badly.
The laser pointer is widely used as a gift, and we do not know how old its holder and if he will take it as a weapon. It is very dangerous. Everybody should pay much attention to the laser safety problems to protect ourselves and others.
